Grocery Tax Petition

Illinois is one of only 13 states that tax groceries. One hundred percent of the revenue generated from this tax is sent to municipalities to help balance local budgets. It pays for police, firefighters, and public works processes for municipalities.

Governor Pritzker wants to eliminate the tax without protecting municipalities from devastating funding losses. This isn’t tax relief. It is simply swapping a state tax for a local tax since local governments would likely need to raise taxes at the municipal level to fill the gap.

Senator DeWitte’s legislation eliminates the tax and backfills the lost revenues cities and villages would face.
